Most Needed Items in Your Survival First Aid Kit: Part 1

One of the items that get overlooked by preppers is a substantial first aid kit. Among all of the stockpiled food, arms and other survival gear, is a lackluster medical kit, or no medical kit at all.

A cheap, prepackaged first aid kit might suffice for everyday life, but in a doomsday situation, it won’t be of much help. It may take care of a cut finger or a skinned knee, but that’s about the extent of it.

Imagine having no access to a family physician, urgent care or emergency room. You will need a medical supply kit that is well stocked and has all of the necessary tools and supplies for many different medical needs or emergencies that may spring up.

To begin, you need a good container for all of your medical supplies. It should be something that allows you to organize the contents. I recommend getting a large fishing tackle box, which has cantilevered trays for organizing smaller items, and an open bottom for large items.

The stuff

Hygiene items

It is uncommon for small wounds to cause death, but an infected wound can turn severe quickly. Make sure to have proper hygiene supplies on hand to sterilize and eliminate infections.

  • Antibacterial hand soap
  • Sterile rubber gloves
  • Medical face mask
  • CPR mask

Wound care

This is the number one thing you need to include in your first aid kit. You need to be able to manage anything from a small papercut to a severed limb.

  • Irrigation syringe: Before you can bandage a wound, you need to clean it out. You do this by squirting some clean water into it. If the water is clean enough for drinking, it’s clean enough for irrigation.
  • Alcohol towelettes
  • Antibacterial ointment
  • Butterfly closures
  • Cloth adhesive bandage strips
  • Cloth knuckle bandages
  • Cloth fingertip bandages
  • Large bandages
  • Medical tape

Fractured bone care

Broken bones are categorized as either a fracture or a compound fracture. A compound fracture occurs when the end of the bone is protruding through the skin. In those cases, you need to treat both the fracture and the open wound.

  • Sam splint
  • Elastic bandages
  • Combat cravat
