The European Organization for Nuclear Research, also known by its French acronym CERN, was founded in 1954 in Switzerland. Ostensibly, the organization operates high-tech machines like the Large Hadron Collider and has made such huge breakthroughs as discovering the Higgs boson, or God, particle.
But conspiracy theorists have long held that the bleeding-edge organization could, whether inadvertently or for some nefarious purposes, bring about the end of the world as we know it. Does this theory hold water?
Could the world come to a stop due to the actions of some European scientists?
What Does CERN Actually Do?
CERN uses technology to study the incredibly small building blocks of matter: subatomic particles. That’s the purpose of their Large Hadron Collider, a massive apparatus that allows the researchers to slam subatomic particles together in order to study the effects of powerful forces on subatomic structures.
This research is as groundbreaking as it is worrying. Many have voiced concerns that the super-advanced research could inadvertently unleash forces we don’t understand, similar to the discovery of the atomic bomb.
Some outlandish theories hold that the facility could even somehow open a portal to Hell, another dimension, or an alternate timeline.
Could They be a Real Threat to Humanity?
Realistically speaking, could CERN’s research be a threat to the lives of every human on Earth? By their own admission, they’ve tried to open tiny black holes in order to study antimatter. According to the organization, it wasn’t successful in this endeavor.
Many have worried that a super-dense structure like a black hole could be catastrophic to Earth, no matter the size. Others have pointed out that the foundational subatomic structures that CERN manipulates could be intertwined in ways we don’t fully understand.
CERN Addresses Fears
CERN has asserted that their research is perfectly safe, and that they’re doing everything in their power to keep it that way. After all, they admit that they’re manipulating the fundamental forces of reality. But could they hold the potential to accidentally unleash hell on earth and destroy life as we know it?
Probably not. But… maybe. We’ll just have to hope they know what they’re doing, won’t we?
